All about MOD Files
The MOD file type is primarily associated with VLC.
What is a MOD file?
Note: The MOD extension can refer to different file types depending on its origin. Its most common use is as a camcorder video file produced by devices from Canon, JVC, or Panasonic. These files store video much like MPEG files and can be played with compatible media players.
Other specific uses include:
- Boot Modules: Used in Linux systems, these MOD files (often in ELF format) serve as modules for the GRUB bootloader. More details can be found at GNU GRUB.
- Robotics Modules: In industrial settings, certain MOD files are part of RobotStudio programs used for ABB robots. Visit ABB RobotStudio for reference.
- Game Modifications: Some MOD files modify game content in titles like Hearts of Iron IV or Crusader Kings II. They are used to change game behavior and add features. Information is available at Paradox Interactive.
- Fantasy Grounds Modules: These files hold roleplaying game data for platforms like Fantasy Grounds Unity. More info at Fantasy Grounds.
- Programming Modules: In the Go programming language, a file named go.mod defines package dependencies. See Go Modules for further details.
- Design and Optimization Files: Certain MOD files are used in MicroStation CAD drawings or as input for optimization models with IBM ILOG CPLEX. More details can be checked at Bentley and IBM CPLEX.
- Simulation Models: Some simulation software, like ProModel, uses MOD files to store simulation parameters. Visit ProModel Simulation for information.
- Metadata Files: A few MOD files serve as XML-based metadata containers for game modifications.
FilExt.com notes: This extension covers a range of uses. Identifying the source of your MOD file is essential to choose the correct program for opening and viewing it. For instance, video files are best played with media players like VLC, while go.mod files are managed within a development environment.
How to open a MOD file

If you cannot open your MOD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MOD file directly in the browser:. MOD file format:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our examination of the MOD files comes to the following conclusion:
The MOD file ending includes different formats for the applicable programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in MOD files:
- 20% of all MOD files start with the bytes 00 00 01 BA 44 00 crucial for this file format. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. Most of these files are 9 MB to 190 MB in size. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. Examples of file names are MOV001.MOD or MOV00A.MOD.
- 7% of all MOD files internally use the ZIP format, so several files are combined and compressed into one MOD file. MOD files contain from 3 to 50 compressed files. Common included file names are definition.xml and thumbnail.png. If you'd like to see the images and files included, just rename the file extension to .zip and double-click. Most of these files are 180 KB to 22 MB in size. The files contain the following words: definition. Files like these are about players, guide, wildemount and explorer.
All other MOD files (73%) have different formats, often e.g. Nonpareil Module, Monarch for Windows Model, ELF, module and version. Tagged as synergies, pcle, descriptor, zacchaeus, password, legacy, module, model or role. If you want to find out what your MOD file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
