MODULE file format details:
To view or edit MODULE files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the MODULE files:
The MODULE file ending includes different formats for different programs. But the following two file formats are common:
- 30% of all MODULE files use the same file format, which have the signature mohd. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The average file size is 70 MB with most files being between 4 KB and 1 GB in size. The file type is a fairly new file format. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as mohd3. The following filename is common: forge_objects-rtx-new.module or common-rtx-new.module. Files like these are about objects, forge, multiplayer, mainmenu, globals, common, academy, drills and weapon.
- 20% of all MODULE files are based on the zip format, so multiple files are compressed and stored together in one MODULE file. The 8 to 155 compressed files are called 00 - Table of Contents.md, 01 - Introduction.md, 02 - Neverwinter Map.md, 03 - Locations of Neverwinter.md, 04 - Lord Neverember.md, 05 - History of Neverwinter.md, 06 - Homebrew Locations.md, 07 - Quick Adventures, 08 - Appendix A - Maps, 09 - Appendix B - Shop Cards, 10 - Appendix C - Creatures, 11 - Credits.md, 99 - Back Cover.md, CHANGELOG.md, Cover.jpg, Mod, \Images\, \PrintImages\, \assets\, \items\ and \m\. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. The file size is in the range of 7 MB to 59 MB. The following keywords are characteristic: 00 - Table of Contents.md and yccQ. The following filename is common: guide-to-neverwinter.module. These files are often associated with ready, animated, lair and serial.
All the rest of the MODULE files (50%) have different formats, often, for example, config and JSON. Files like these are sometimes linked to campaign, unification, tutorial, levels, dungeon, points or server. Just click the "Choose your .module file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your MODULE file is.
