What is a MODD file?

MODD files mostly belong to Picture Motion Browser by Sony. MODD is the filename extension of video metadata files generated when an AVCHD, MPEG2, MP4, M2TS or MPG movie recorded with a Sony camcorder is imported into PlayMemories or Picture Motion Browser image management software. The contents of MODD files are stored in XML format as an array (<array>) containing a dictionary of key-data pairs as MetaDataList, ClipInformationFile, AVCHDDivisionInfoList, FileSize, and Geolocation data. The MODD metadata file is always saved alongside its corresponding video file. Also, the base name of the MODD file is always the same as the full name of the video file. For instance, a video file that is named xxxxx.mp4 will have a corresponding xxxxx.mp4.modd that contains metadata about the video.

How to open a MODD file

You need a suitable software like Picture Motion Browser from Sony to open a MODD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MODD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MODD file directly in the browser:. The MODD file extension is rather rarely used and mainly uses a defined MODD format. The file formats most commonly found in MODD files are:

• 98% of all MODD files are associated with Picture Motion Browser data files, which internally utilize the well-known XML format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. The files are 230 bytes to 1 KB in size, with a median of 380 bytes. This is an old file type which is rarely used today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>, MetaDataList, array, dict, plist version, string, DateTimeOriginal, real and UserDescription. An example of a file name is 20180601.modd or 20180601.m2ts.modd.
