All about S3D Files
The S3D file type is primarily associated with Silhouette Studio.
What is an S3D file
These files do not follow a single standard. Instead, they may store data in various internal formats such as XML, ZIP archives, Microsoft Compound files, or even SQL databases. Your file might belong to one of these groups:
- Silhouette 3D models – Used in Silhouette Studio to save 3D designs. For more details, see the Silhouette Studio webpage.
- Game data – Some S3D files are game assets, for example, those used in EverQuest and EverQuest II to store 3D model information.
- Design and simulation models – These include file types like Strata 3D files, Plant Simulation 3D Models from Tecnomatix, and Solar3D scene files used in programs such as SketchUp. They also cover furniture design or surfboard design files that may be stored in XML.
- Simulation and scientific data – Examples include FDS simulation data files used with FDS Smokeview for fire dynamics, and files holding 3D molecular structure data from ACD/ChemSketch.
- Color and cutting data – Some files serve as 3D LUT files for color lookup processes and 3D cutline files for manufacturing, often referenced in design programs such as SolidWorks.
- Database containers – Occasionally, an S3D file may function as a SQLite 3 database file for storing structured data (SQLite website).
Because the same extension is used in different contexts, it is important to identify the source program that created your file. To open or view it, use the application intended for that specific use. For instance, if the file is a Silhouette 3D model, opening it with Silhouette Studio is the appropriate choice.
FilExt.com note: Sometimes, you can inspect an S3D file with a text editor (for XML-based files), but more complex data usually requires using the native viewer or editor. This approach ensures that all specialized data is interpreted correctly.
How do you open S3D files?
You need a suitable software like Silhouette Studio to open an S3D file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your S3D file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a S3D file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert S3D files:
- Silhouette Studio
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. S3D files are often referred to as Silhouette Studio 3d images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- EverQuest by SonyThis file format is classified as Game.
- Micrografx Simply 3D Project
- Sealed (CAD File) by SealedMediaSealedMedia software integrates with existing business systems to deliver protection of valuable digital information. It enables complete control over who can use sensitive information and when. The originator can change rights to access and use a document even after it’s been delivered including revoking access. The Mime types used with this association are: application/vnd.sealed.3df. The identifying characters used for this association are - Hex: 53 6F 66 74 53 45 41 4C 20, ASCII: SoftSEAL. This file format is classified as CAD/CAM. Related links: Unsealer
- Shape3d (Surfboard Design) by AWACSShape3d is a professional tool for surfboard and sailboard conception, from designing to shaping with a CNC machine. These are XML style files. This file format is classified as XML.
- Strata 3D(3D modeling/animation)
S3D format details:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our examination of the S3D files comes to the following conclusion:
The S3D file extension is used very often and is used by different programs with different formats. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 25% of all S3D files are Shadowgrounds 3D model files. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The average file size is 1 MB with most files being between 26 KB and 83 MB in size. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Author, Copyright, Date, Email, HEAD, Tags and MPOL. These files are attributed to upper, geometric, virtual, camera, guinea, lower, afro, news and poly.
- 15% of all S3D files use the same file format, which have the signature 00 50 46 53 20 00 00 02. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. Most of these files are 200 KB to 5 MB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. PFS. The following filename is common: abysmal.s3d. Such files sometimes refer to gequip, umbral and kael.
The remaining 60% of all S3D files are different files with different signatures, the following 14 formats exist: Strata 3D Design, Micrografx Simply 3D project, Shape3d Design, Spazio3D drawing, XML, SQL, ZIP, ACD and ISL. Often described as system, kuhinja, room, islrgb, scene, model or data. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your S3D file!

an s3d 3D model file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with S3D files
- Associate the S3D file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open 3d model files. Because only the current version supports the latest S3D file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Silhouette Studio update.
- To make sure that your S3D file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
