Opening a MOF File
The MOF file type is primarily associated with WMI.
What is a MOF file
The MOF file is a Management Object Format file that defines classes and objects for Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI). It acts as a script or schema that tells Windows how to monitor and manage system settings.
This file may come in different internal formats. It is often stored in a Microsoft Compound binary format or as a UTF-16 (LE) text file. Its contents are used by tools to compile and add information to the WMI repository. Once compiled with utilities like mofcomp.exe or processed via WMIC, the definitions become part of the system configuration used by various Windows services.
- WMI Definitions: Provides the schema for WMI classes and objects.
- Configuration Scripts: Acts as instructions for system management components.
- System Management: Supports tools such as the Windows Installer XML Toolset and System Center Configuration Manager.
FilExt.com note: For more detailed usage and examples, visit the WiX Toolset site and Microsoft documentation. You can open a MOF file with an advanced text editor, but editing it requires care and proper compilation to update the system repository correctly.
How to open MOF files
You need a suitable software like WMI to open a MOF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MOF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MOF file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert MOF files:
- WMI
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. MOF files are often referred to as WMI systems because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- MSinfo by Microsoft CorporationMSInfo is a Microsoft Technical Support application designed to gather system configuration information from customers. This information can assist a technical support professional to more quickly identify the cause of a customer's problem.
- Systems Management Server (SMS) (Managed Object Format) by Microsoft CorporationWith SMS you can provide your organization a change and configuration management solution to deliver relevant software and updates to users of Microsoft and third-party applications.
MOF file extension format:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the MOF files looks like this:
The MOF file type is a very commonly used file extension and covers different formats for different programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 65% of all MOF files use the Microsoft Compound File format, known also as OLE2 Compound Document format or Composite Document File format. This general-purpose file format provides a file-system-like structure within a file for the storage of arbitrary, application-specific streams of data. The file signature of compound files is defined as D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1, so the first character of a file looks like "DOCFILE". Each MOF file has an application name, which is Windows Installer XML, Windows Installer, Picture It! or Crystal Reports. The unique Windows component object identifier is 000c1084-0000-0000-c000-000000000046 or 00020d0b-0000-0000-c000-000000000046. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The file size is in the range of 8 KB to 3 MB. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Examples of file names are MOF_20180601.mof or FILE001.MOF. Such files sometimes refer to dateiname, verloren, archivo, filename, missing, nombre, perdido and name.
- 9% of all MOF files use the popular UTF-16 (LE) file format. UTF-16 (LE) is an character encoding system for Unicode. UTF-16 files can be viewed in any modern text editor. These files start with the two bytes FF FE, the so called byte order mark (BOM). They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are 1 KB to 97 KB in size, with a median of 4 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: Windows, Microsoft, #pragma autorecover and namespace. The file name ProtectionManagement_Uninstall.mof or localhost.mof is typical for these files. Such MOF files store data about msft, management, configuration, uninstall, protection and schema.
All other MOF files (26%) have no uniform format, the following 4 formats exist: Source. The category is lost, fichier, perdu, installation, database, software, dosya or safe. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your MOF file!
Technical Data for MOF File Extension
a mof WMI schema definition file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with MOF files
- Associate the MOF file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open wmi schema definition files. Because only the current version supports the latest MOF file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available WMI update.
- To make sure that your MOF file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .MOF file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
