Opening an MPD File
The MPD file type is primarily associated with Project.
What is an MPD file?
- Structure: A typical MPD file structure consists of: 'Periods' (describe a part of the content with a start time and duration), 'Adaptation Sets' (contain one or multiple media streams), 'Representations' (allow an adaptation set to contain multiple versions of a stream, each encoded differently), 'SubRepresentations' (subsets of representations; information about a particular stream), 'Media Segments' (media files that are played by the client), and 'Index Segments' (contain information about media segment durations and stream access point types).
- Other associations: MPD could also refer to a Microsoft Project file, a deprecated file format used prior to version 2007. Newer versions of Project can read these files, but not create them.
How to open an MPD file
You need a suitable software like Project to open an MPD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MPD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MPD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert MPD files:
- Project by Microsoft
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. MPD files are often referred to as Project databases because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- File List Creator (MP3 playlist file) by WenSoftwareFile List Creator is a program that can help you create catalogs of any file types and save them as data files. Using File List Creator, you can create reports as lists and output them as text, HTML or playlist file formats, and perform other functions on the data. The MPD files commonly store a playlist of MP3 files, while also being capable of storing digital photos and compressed file formats. This file format is classified as Data. - MapDraw (chemical sequence map file) by Biomolecular Computing Resource (BimCore) at Emory University School of MedicineMapDraw is a chemical sequence mapping software that is used in pairwise sequence alignment and multiple sequence alignment. MapDraw displays the results of any of the six different formats, including both linear and circular maps as well. The MPD file contains the mapped chemical, as well as any modifications that are made to the sequence within this program. This file format is classified as Data. - Mini-port Driver (driver file) by MicrosoftMini-port Driver is a driver developed by Microsoft that acts as half of a driver pair. Within a driver pair, one driver handles general tasks that are common to a collection of devices, while the other driver handles tasks that are specific to its corresponding device. The MPD file contains the necessary driver file and information upon installation. This file format is classified as System. Related links: Classification of MiniPort drivers, Resolved issues
- MLCad (LDraw multipart model file) by LM-SoftwareMLCad, (Mike's Lego CAD), is a powerful CAD system that is specifically designed to create building instructions for personalized LEGO models and figures. This program reads and writes compatible files, namely, MPD and LDR files. The MPD files contain the saved building instructions and figures that are created by the user. This file format is classified as CAD. Related links: LDraw website, Tutorial
- My Digital Photos (filmstrip file) by Super Win SoftwareMy Digital Photos is a filmstrip photo program that allows the user to compile a filmstrip into an EXE file and send to other people for viewing on their computer. The MPD file contains the filmstrip that is created through this program, which is subsequently complied into an EXE file. This file format is classified as Camera Raw. - SCSI MiniPort Driver (driver file) by MicrosoftSCSI MiniPort Driver is a driver that is a standard feature of the Windows storage architecture. The SCSI Port driver streamlines the Windows storage subsystem by emulating a simplified SCSI adapter. This means that the user is able to write storage class drivers with minimal concern for the unique hardware of each SCSI adapter. The MPD file contains the necessary driver file upon installation. MPD format details:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our evaluation of the MPD files looks like this:
MPD is a very commonly used file extension and mainly uses a special format. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 75% of all MPD files are associated with DASH Media Presentation Description files, which internally utilize the well-known XML format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. Most of these files are 2 KB to 49 KB in size. This file type is new and state-of-the-art. The following keywords are characteristic: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, type, xsi, schemaLocation, <MPD xmlns="urn:mpeg:dash:schema:mpd:2011" and http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance. Manifest.mpd or master.mpd is a typical file name. Such files are related to stream, dash, video, live, corrected, output, playlist and index.
- 8% of all MPD files have the same signature 0 FILE . The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. The average file size is 22 KB with most files being between 4 KB and 550 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. FILE, 0 Name, 0 Author and Model. Some examples of file names are builder.mpd or 11001-1_robot_and_dog.mpd. Files like these are sometimes connected to challenge, motorized and robot.
The remaining 17% of all MPD files are files with no common format, frequently e.g. XML and GNBCFA. They are often associated with offline, anevia, cinema, audio, global, canal or high. Just click the "Choose your .mpd file to view" button on this page to find out what your MPD file is.

How to solve problems with MPD files
- Associate the MPD file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open database files. Because only the current version supports the latest MPD file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available Project update.
- To make sure that your MPD file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .MPD file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
