What is an MPI file?

MPI files mostly belong to Macrium Reflect. The MPI file extension does not refer to one single type of file. Instead, it can represent several different data formats depending on the creator and its intended use.

Disk image file: Often created by backup software such as Macrium Reflect, these files contain an exact copy of the contents of a hard disk or partition. They are used for system recovery and backup restoration.

Mobile phone image: In some cases, an MPI file stores raw image data produced by mobile devices or emulators. This variant is tailored for specific hardware or software environments.

MPEG-4 video container: Another variant acts as a container for video and audio streams. Sometimes referred to as the MPIX video container format, these files may be played with multimedia tools like QuickTime Player, as detailed in the QuickTime Support documentation.

How to open an MPI file

You need a suitable software like Macrium Reflect to open an MPI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MPI file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MPI file directly in the browser:. MPI file format:

To find out what program is needed to open MPI files, you need to determine the file format. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. The MPI file extension is not common and is primarily used by a single program. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 70% of all MPI files have the same signature 56 84 40 7F 01 CC E9 49 93 3F 7F 60 D2 01 88 ED. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are often between 1 GB and 200 GB in size. The file type is a fairly new file format. These files are often associated with disk.
• 6% of all MPI files start with the magic bytes BEGINMODEL , which are always the first bytes of this file format. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. Most of these files are 28 KB to 520 KB in size. The files contain the following words: ! Number of Objective Functions:   1, BEGINMODEL, MPIFile, Number of Constraints and !
