What is an MTM file?

MTM files mostly belong to MultiTracker. MTM files are Multi-Track Music modules used to store digital music composition data.
These files hold a collection of sample data, instrument definitions, and pattern sequences that tracker software uses to play multi‐channel audio.

• Usage: Played and edited with tracker applications such as MultiTracker or MilkyTracker.

How to open MTM files

You need a suitable software like MultiTracker to open an MTM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MTM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MTM file directly in the browser:. Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our examination of the MTM files comes to the following conclusion:

The MTM file extension is rarely used and covers different formats for different programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 25% of all MTM files are MultiTracker module files. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are on average 21 KB in size and range from 270 bytes to 230 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: DHAV and MTM$.
• 20% of all MTM files start with the bytes 01 00 00 00 crucial for this file format. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The files are on average 670 bytes in size and range from 470 bytes to 900 bytes. Some examples of file names are Current.mtm or Template.mtm.
