What is an MWD file?

MWD files mostly belong to MWD. MWD = Measurement While Drilling A number of different vendors produce software for use with MWD hardware. These include, but are not necessarily limited to: BenchTree, XXT, GE Honeywell. Program names include: BenchTree, XXT, QMWDPC. These should be text files.

How do you open MWD files?

You need a suitable software like MWD to open an MWD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. MWD is seldom used as a file extension and includes many different file formats. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 10% of all MWD files store the data in the RTF file format. RTF is short for Rich Text Format, a proprietary document file format for cross-platform document interchange with Microsoft products. It may contain formatted text and graphics. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. The files are 1 KB to 2 KB in size, with a median of 2 KB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as ansi, ansicpg1252, cocoartf, fonttbl, rtf1, {\colortbl;\red255\green255\blue255;}, fswiss, {\info, cocoasubrtf600, expandedcolortbl and fcharset0 Helvetica.
• 10% of all MWD files start with the bytes 01 00 41 44 00 crucial for this file format. They consist of unreadable binary data. Most of these files are 850 bytes to 22 KB in size.
