What is an MZP file?

MZP files mostly belong to Autodesk 3ds Max. MZP files serve two main roles. The primary use is as a 3ds Max plugin archive that uses a ZIP structure. These files store plugins for Autodesk's 3ds Max and contain the necessary resources that the software loads to extend its features.
Additionally, some MZP files come as a compressed, self‐extracting archive in EXE format. In this role, the file acts as a packaged installer using technologies such as those provided by 7-Zip.

They keep plugin files in a structured archive that 3ds Max recognizes automatically.

They may also run as an executable that unpacks its content once launched.

Extraction can often be performed manually by renaming the extension to .ZIP and opening with standard tools.

How to open MZP files

You need a suitable software like Autodesk 3ds Max to open an MZP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. MZP file format:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. The MZP file extension is not common and covers different formats for different programs. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 60% of all MZP files use the ZIP format, so several files are compressed and saved in one MZP file. 6 to 60 compressed files with names like mzp.run are common. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. MZP files can be up to 77 MB in size, but are often around 12 KB - 1 MB. The following filename is common: poliigon-addon-3dsmax.mzp. Such files sometimes refer to bitmaps, relink, dsmax, poliigon, addon, josbalcaen, generator, exporter, importer, manager, profile, helper, batch and sweep.
• 30% of all MZP files are associated with WinArchiver Mountable compressed Archive files, which internally utilize the well-known EXE format. EXE is the abbreviation for executable and is the standard executable file format on Windows. The format can be identified by the letters "MZ" at the beginning. Executable files can also be used to distribute viruses and other types of malicious software (malware). The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are 1 MB to 2 GB in size, with a median of 70 MB. The file name Learn Spanish Fast - Easy with Michel Thomas - Audio Book.mzp or Candydoll - Swimsuit Collection(Total 750 Pics, 13 Videos).mzp is typical for these files. Files like these are about book, collection, spanish, audio, learn and fast.

All other MZP files (10%) have different formats, frequently e.g. PS2 generic game data container.
