All about MPZ Files
The MPZ file type is primarily associated with Global Mapper.
What is an MPZ file
They may be a MapPlus map data file that is stored as a ZIP archive. This file holds mobile mapping data with multiple layers and geospatial details.
Alternatively, an MPZ file might be a compressed Microsoft Publisher file that uses the Microsoft Compound format.
- Map Data: This type contains map layers that can be viewed with mapping software such as Global Mapper. The ZIP structure allows you to extract and inspect the internal map data.
- Publisher Archive: This form packages layout and document information from Microsoft Publisher. It generally requires Microsoft Publisher to open it properly.
For further details on the Publisher variant, see the Microsoft Publisher page.
FilExt.com tip: These files use internal formats (ZIP for MapPlus and Compound for Publisher) that affect how they are accessed and viewed.
How do you open MPZ files?
You need a suitable software like Global Mapper to open an MPZ file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MPZ file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MPZ file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert MPZ files:
- Global Mapper
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. MPZ files are often referred to as Global Mapper gis because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Moove (Resource Description File) by moove Corporationmoove online is a 3D chat world where you buid/decorate your own home and customize your avatar. The .MPZ files are files which facilitate the design of individual items in this world. The identifying characters used for this association are - Hex: 4D 4F 4F 56 45 5F 50 41 43 4B, ASCII: MOOVE_PACK.
- MyPhotoZip File(compression for image files)
- SignIQ (Project) by ImpulseLogicSignIQ provides a complete workflow for designing, distributing, producing and managing printed signage, labelling, ticketing and other in-store advertising material.
- SoundSlimmer (Compressed MP3 Audio) by Sound Genetics Inc.The target of SoundSlimmer is to save storage capacity and decrease communication lines requirements for owners of mp3 music collections. The program uses a lossless recompression mechanism that, when uncompressed, yields the same MP3 file byte-for-byte (i.e., same md5 sum). Compression ratios seem to be in the 10% range (see linked discussion) with some larger. At present, no players support the MPZ format directly; files need to be reconverted back to MP3. The identifying characters used for this association are - Hex: 05 04 05 01. This file format is classified as Audio. Related links: MPZ Discussion
MPZ file format:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the MPZ files looks like this:
As a file extension, MPZ isn't very common and covers different formats for different programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 45% of all MPZ files use the ZIP format, so multiple files are compressed and stored together in one MPZ file. Most often they are 2 to 50 compressed files. File names are e.g. data.sdb and \.com.miocool.mapplus.metadata\metadata.xml. If you want to see the included files and images, simply rename the file extension to .zip and double-click it. Most of these files are 4 KB to 8 MB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: data. 2020-06-01 10 30 - 2020-06-01 10 30, etc.mpz is a typical file name. These files are attributed to fldcap, maint, street and open.
- 40% of all MPZ files are based on the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This file format is used by previous Microsoft Office programs and other Windows programs and stores the data in complex containers and sections. The first 8 bytes of the CFB format are D0CF11E0A1B11AE1 (which looks like "DOCFILE"). There is also a globally unique identifier 0d4c9b60-7843-11cf-1234-56789abcdeff. The internal containers are called Contents. MPZ files can be up to 35 MB in size, but are often around 100 KB - 3 MB.
All the rest of the MPZ files (15%) have different formats, frequently e.g. SoundSlimmer compressed audio, Moove Resource Description and GZIP. Just click the "Choose your .mpz file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your MPZ file is.
Technical Data for MPZ File Extension
an mpz mapping data is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with MPZ files
- Associate the MPZ file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open mapping data files. Because only the current version supports the latest MPZ file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Global Mapper update.
- To make sure that your MPZ file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .MPZ file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
