Opening NAMES Files
The NAMES file type is primarily associated with Weka.
What is a NAMES file?
This file is used to hold important information about a dataset that is later used in machine learning. In many instances, Weka creates and uses NAMES files to store details like attribute names, dataset citations, and descriptions that define the structure of the corresponding data.
- Primary use: Contains metadata for datasets to help machine learning software understand the input data.
- Other uses: May list attributes for spam email databases or serve as labels for object detection tasks (for example, in Darknet with YOLO).
- File content: Simple, structured text that describes data fields, feature vector details, and citations without holding the raw data.
- Access method: Open these files using any plain text editor or within the software that created them.

- Weka
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. NAMES files are often referred to as Weka data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- TensorFlowNAMES files are Machine Learning data set description. A DATA file with the same name contains the data. Example NAMES and DATA files are on https://archive.ics.uci.edu/ml/datasets.php. This file format is classified as Developer. Related links: Data set description
NAMES file format details:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our evaluation of the NAMES files looks like this:
NAMES is one of the most common file extensions and primarily uses a special format that can be read by various programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in NAMES files:
- 75% of all NAMES files belong to Machine Learning data set description. These files contain text and words, not binary data. The files are on average 3 KB in size and range from 1 KB to 5 KB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Title, Database, 2. Sources, Donor, 2. Source Information and University. An example of a file name is iris.names or wine.names. Such files sometimes refer to wdbc, imports, abalone, agaricus, lepiota, auto, housing and credit.
- 5% of all NAMES files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "Title: " at the beginning. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The file size is in the range of 1 KB to 27 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Abstract, Title, from, ------------, Data Set Characteristics: Multivariate, Number and States. The following filename is common: communities.names or parkinsons.names. These files are often associated with secom, plants, diagnosis, transfusion, data and trajectories.
All other NAMES files (20%) have different formats, the following 10 formats can be found: This, SPAM, person, Human, Parkinsons, NAME, Note and aero. Often described as disease, heart, lung, popularity, online or news. Just click the "Choose your .names file to view" button on this page to find out what your NAMES file is.
