Opening an NB0 File
The NB0 file type is primarily associated with Nuvoton NuWriter.
What is an NB0 file?
Bootloader use: In many cases, NB0 files serve as bootloader images. This means they are loaded when the hardware starts up, initializing the system. For example, devices using Nuvoton NuWriter use NB0 files to boot a Windows CE system. More details can be found at Nuvoton.
Firmware update use: Other NB0 files provide firmware updates. They are used with tools such as SP Flash Tool to install MediaTek firmware updates. For more information, visit SP Flash Tool.

Programs that open and convert NB0 files:
- Nuvoton NuWriter
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. NB0 files are often referred to as Nuvoton NuWriter executables because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Microsoft Device Emulator (OS image) by Microsoft CorporationThe Microsoft Device Emulator 1.0 is a standalone version of the same ARM based Device Emulator that ships as part of Visual Studio 2005. The standalone emulator is intended for situations when you want to demonstrate or test your application on a computer that does not have Visual Studio 2005 installed. In addition, we are offering the Windows Mobile 5.0 MSFP operating system images that you can use with the Device Emulator. The NB0 file contains an OS image of a Windows Mobile Device. nb0 files can be opened with DeviceManager.exe or dvcmumanager.exe (Device Manager). You can store configuration information in the so called .dess file (Device Emulator Saved State) files. So the nb0 file only contains the OS image and the .dess file contains the configuration settings (installed programs etc. in the OS image).
NB0 file format details:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our examination of the NB0 files comes to the following conclusion:
NB0 is not a commonly used file extension and includes different formats for different programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in NB0 files:
- 20% of all NB0 files start with the bytes FE 03 00 EA 00 00 00 00 crucial for this file format. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. Most of these files are 260 KB to 98 MB in size. The files contain the following words: ECEC. NK.nb0 or xip.nb0 is a typical file name. Files like these are sometimes connected to eboot.
- 8% of all NB0 files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "2C 00 00 00" at the beginning. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. A typical file size is 1 GB. The files contain the following words: backup, emmc, firehose and prog. Examples of file names are E2M-026C-0-00WW-B02.nb0 or E2M-021Q-0-00WW-B02.nb0.
All other NB0 files (72%) have no uniform format, often e.g. FRT. Often described as backup, flash or logo. You can get all the details of your NB0 file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .nb0 file to analyze" above.
Technical Data for NB0 File Extension

How to solve problems with NB0 files
- Associate the NB0 file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open firmware binary images. Because only the current version supports the latest NB0 file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Nuvoton NuWriter update.
- To make sure that your NB0 file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
