Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. Header signature for the CFB format with 8-byte Hex value D0CF11E0A1B11AE1 (which looks like "DOCFILE"). There is also a unique Windows component object identifier (CLSID) which is a5e8a1c8-8f33-11d2-a714-00a02445585a. Sections and streams in the file have names like BITMAP, Elements, Header, OLEClients and Version. The files are on average 1 MB in size and range from 200 KB to 2 MB.
