All about NFS Files
The NFS file type is primarily associated with Netflix.
What is an NFS file?
- Main Use: NFS stands for Netflix Subtitle File. Netflix is a subscription-oriented streaming application used for watching movies and TV shows using an internet-enabled device such as a computer, smartphone, tablet, or television. Netflix uses NFS files to store subtitles used to display the dialogue in a TV show/movie on the application. NFS files are specifically meant for offline viewing, a feature that was launched on Netflix at the end of 2016. When a specific movie/tv show is downloaded on the device, the corresponding NFS subtitle files get auto-downloaded along with additional files including MANIFEST, NFV, NFI, and NFA files. Similarly, deleting the downloaded content will also delete the NFS subtitle file along with other related files.
- Other Uses: NFS can also stand for Network File System file. Network File System protocol is used in granting permission to file enabling them to be accessed over a network. Network File System uses NFS files to save a temporary copy of a file accessed via the protocol or to save a file copy of a file deleted during usage by the NFS process. NFS files are also used by the GPS navigation application, Navigon, to store 3D function terrain data. F1 2015, a Formula 1 racing-based video game, also uses NFS files to store speech-related information.
How do you open NFS files?
You need a suitable software like Netflix to open an NFS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your NFS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a NFS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

NFS format details:
To find out what program is needed to open NFS files, you need to determine the file format. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the NFS files is as follows:
An NFS file is used by different programs with different formats. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 50% of all NFS files internally utilize the XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. The files are on average 110 KB in size and range from 3 KB to 250 KB. The file type is a fairly new file format. The keywords <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no"?> and <tt xmlns:tt="http://www.w3.org/ns/ttml" xmlns:ttm="http://www.w3.org/ns/ttml#metadata" xmlns:ttp="http://www.w3.org/ns/ttml#parameter" xmlns:tts are typical for these files.
- 20% of all NFS files start with the bytes NeFS, which are crucial for this file format. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. NFS files are between 170 KB and 200 MB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as NeFS and C35C7CD51B300E573BE15E0C8D6952056DD576B859870A14ABB9E04436AC4606. The file name en_an.nfs or en_an_startup.nfs is characteristic of these files. These files are often associated with startup, engineer, player and music.
All other NFS files (30%) have no uniform format, often, for example, ZIP. Tagged as skin, device or brand. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your NFS file!
Technical Data for NFS File Extension
an nfs Netflix subtitle file is a special file format by Netflix and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with NFS files
- Associate the NFS file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open netflix subtitle files. Because only the current version supports the latest NFS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Netflix manufacturer website after an available Netflix update.
- To make sure that your NFS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .NFS file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
