Opening NSX Files
The NSX file type is primarily associated with Synology NoteStation.
What is an NSX file?
How to open NSX files
You need a suitable software like Synology NoteStation to open an NSX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your NSX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a NSX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

NSX format details:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Below you will find our evaluation of the NSX files:
NSX is rarely used as a file extension and covers different formats for different programs. But the following two file formats are common:
- 30% of all NSX files are Index Apollo Database Engine files. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are on average 9 KB in size and range from 3 KB to 380 KB. The file type was created 20 years ago but is still used today.
- 30% of all NSX files are based on the zip format, i.e. an NSX file contains several compressed files. Primarily 6 to 140 files are included. If you'd like to see the images and files included, just rename the file extension to .zip and double-click. The files are 1 KB to 18 MB in size, with a median of 220 KB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as config, json and note. Such files sometimes refer to admin, and have often person-related content.
All other NSX files (40%) have different formats, often e.g. JSON and XML. Often described as project. Just click the "Choose your .nsx file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your NSX file is.
Technical Data for NSX File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.

an nsx container file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with NSX files
- Associate the NSX file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open container files. Because only the current version supports the latest NSX file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Synology NoteStation update.
- To make sure that your NSX file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
