What is an ODEX file?

ODEX files mostly belong to Android by Open Handset Alliance. An ODEX file is a pre-processed/pre-compiled version of the Java code saved in the Classes.dex file in an Android package (APK). The ODEX file is saved in Optimized Dalvik Executable format which is an execution-ready version of DEX (Dalvik Executable Format). Unlike DEX application files which are loaded into a phone's Dalvik cache for quick launch, ODEX apps are not cached. Instead, they are pre-compiled for a specific device out-of-the-box to launch faster than standard Android applications. The Dalvik virtual machine on Android operating system can run ODEX files.

What to Do When a .ODEX File Fails to Open

Because .ODEX files can originate from different programs, they aren't universally openable with a single application.
