All about OSM Files
The OSM file type is primarily associated with OpenStreetMap.
What is an OSM file?
How to open OSM files
You need a suitable software like OpenStreetMap from OpenStreetMap Foundation to open an OSM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your OSM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a OSM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

OSM file extension format:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below is our analysis of the OSM files:
OSM is not a commonly used file extension and mainly uses a special format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 95% of all OSM files are associated with OpenStreetMap XML Data files, which internally utilize the well-known XML format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. OSM files can be up to 7 GB in size, but are often around 490 KB - 11 MB. The file type is a fairly new file format. The following keywords are characteristic: <osm version="0.6", <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, copyright, OpenStreetMap and contributors, contributors" attribution="http://www.openstreetmap, spike and generator="CGImap 0.8.5. Some examples of file names are map.osm. These files are often associated with latest.
- 4% of all OSM files start with the magic bytes SCP!, which are always the first bytes of this file format. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are often between 2 KB and 39 MB in size. The files contain the following words: SCP!.
The remaining 1% of all OSM files are files with no common format, such as Oxygen Software SMS data. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your OSM file!
Technical Data for OSM File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.

EXEFile: %ProgramFiles%\TypeGenie.exe \%1\
an osm GIS project file (Map) is a special file format by OpenStreetMap Foundation and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with OSM files
- Associate the OSM file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open gis project file (map)s. Because only the current version supports the latest OSM file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the OpenStreetMap Foundation manufacturer website after an available OpenStreetMap update.
- To make sure that your OSM file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .OSM file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
