What to Do When a .OBF File Fails to Open
A .OBF file can originate from different programs and isn't universally openable.
- Identify the Source: If downloaded for offline navigation, it's likely an OpenStreetMap GIS project file. If received from a developer, it may be an obfuscated script.
- Check the Header: Inspect the first bytes in a hex viewer:
- Readable XML suggests a configuration file.
- "PK" indicates a standard ZIP archive.
- Binary data often points to a compiled map or raster image.
- Use the Original Software: The original program is usually required; try OsmAnd, OpenStreetMap Foundation tools, or ask the sender if uncertain.
- Use this Webpage: Drag and drop the file into our viewer to detect the format, extract readable text/metadata, and preview when possible.
OBF file format:
To find out what program is needed to open OBF files, you need to determine the file format. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the OBF files is as follows:
The OBF file ending includes various formats for various programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 55% of all OBF files are associated with OsmAnd Binary maps Format. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are often between 6 MB and 210 MB in size. The file type is relatively new. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. nameH, highway*, buildingH, serviceH, residentialH, osmand_highway_integrity, europe, trackH, addr:housenumberH and refH. Files like these have the following tags: europe, asia, france, germany, russia, centralamerica, southamerica and italy.
- 15% of all OBF files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "}T©" at the beginning. They consist of unreadable binary data. Most of these files are 8.4 KB to 70 MB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Lr`R and X!"e0y. The file name IMEI_SLOT_1_862266040XXXXXX.obf or IMEI_SLOT_1_862266046XXXXXX.obf is characteristic of these files. Such files sometimes refer to slot, imei, xxxxxx and oeminfo.
All other OBF files (30%) have different formats, the following 7 formats can be found: OBF, Open Board Format, ZIP and STBHDR. Sometimes used for saves, float, world, basemap, planet or spain. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your OBF file!
