All about P7 Files
The P7 file type is primarily associated with OpenSSL.
What is a P7 file?
How to open P7 files
You need a suitable software like OpenSSL to open a P7 file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your P7 file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a P7 file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert P7 files:
- OpenSSL by OpenSSL Developers
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. P7 files are often referred to as OpenSSL web (source)s because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Certificate Manager (public key certificate) by MicrosoftCertificate manager is a digital certificate, certificate trust list, and certificate revocation list management software. It supports P7 public key certificates. This file format is classified as Web (source). Related links: pkcs7, PKCS 7, PKCS7: Cryptographic Message Syntax Standard
- XV (bitmap) by John BradleyXV is an obsolete interactive image manipulation application for the X Window System. It uses a P7 file to save the thumbnail of an image in XV Visual Schnauzer format. This file format is classified as Raster Image. Related links: xv (software), XnView
P7 format details:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our analysis of the P7 files produces the following result:
The P7 file extension is not found very often and mainly uses a defined P7 format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 80% of all P7 files save the data in certificate file format. A digital certificate is a unique, digitally signed document which authoritatively identifies the identity of an individual or organization. Using public key cryptography, its authenticity can be verified to ensure that the software or website you are using is legitimate. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. A typical file size is 3 KB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The following filename is common: signature.p7. Such files are related to xlsx, annexe, fiserv and aunpp.
- 3% of all P7 files start with the magic bytes From: truly_anonymous-youwontfindme-org To: pets, which are always the first bytes of this file format. These files contain text and words, not binary data. The files are on average 1 KB in size and range from 840 bytes to 1 KB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="smime.p7m", Content-Type: application/x-pkcs7-mime;, From: truly_anonymous-youwontfindme-org, MIME-Version: 1.0 and Subject: Just so you know. The file name email.p7 is typical for these files.
The remaining 17% of all P7 files are different files with different signatures, such as Xv's Visual Schnauzer bitmap. These files are often connected to abgegeben, angebot, miofhe or financiere. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your P7 file!

a p7 public key certificate is a special file format by OpenSSL Developers and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with P7 files
- Associate the P7 file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open public key certificates. Because only the current version supports the latest P7 file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the OpenSSL Developers manufacturer website after an available OpenSSL update.
- To make sure that your P7 file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .P7 file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
