Opening a PAP File
The PAP file type is primarily associated with PapDesigner.
What is a PAP file
PAP files are not a single standard format but a tag many distinct file types bear. The most common function is to store Flowchart Designer projects in an XML structure.
They also serve several other purposes:
- Papyrus documents used by Papyrus Office. More information is available on the Papyrus Office site.
- Game animation files managed by Havok Content Tools.
- Game data files associated with titles like Pro Evolution Soccer or Prince of Persia.
- Protein alignment files produced by ClustalW2 in a format akin to FASTA. Details can be found at the EBI JDispatcher.
- Paint project files stored in JSON format by 2paintprojectjs.
- RAR archive files that require WinRAR to open. Visit the WinRAR page for guidance.
- WordPerfect Printer Driver files used for printer definitions supplied by WordPerfect (linked to Corel).
- ComforM print files generated by ComforM Designer.
This file is a project file that keeps structured data. Its internal format may be XML, JSON, RAR, or another proprietary form. Use the originating software to open and view the file properly.
FilExt.com tip: Open the file in a text editor to check whether it begins with XML or JSON markers. Identifying its structure helps in selecting the correct application.
How do you open PAP files?
You need a suitable software like PapDesigner to open a PAP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PAP file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PAP file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

PAP format details:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the PAP files looks like this:
The PAP file extension is not found very often and is used by different programs with different formats. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 20% of all PAP files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "4B 58 01 01 00 00 00 01 9D 01" at the beginning. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The average file size is 170 MB with most files being between 1 MB and 480 MB in size. The file type is very recent. The following keywords are characteristic: bin64, bin64\host, bin64\host\locales, bin\host, bin\host\locales, bin64\xc\id\1 and bin64\xc\id\2.
- 20% of all PAP files store the data in the XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. The files are 4 KB to 38 KB in size, with a median of 15 KB. The keywords <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>, <FRAME GUID="2FB25471-B62C-4EE6-BD43-F819C095ACF8", <PROJECT FORMAT="1.00", CHECKSUM, FORMAT="0000" APP_VERSION="2.2.0.8" and NAME are typical for these files. Such PAP files store data about aufgabe.
All other PAP files (60%) have no consistent format, frequently e.g. JSON, WordPerfect and aln. Sometimes used for qseq or tseq. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your PAP file!

How to solve problems with PAP files
- Associate the PAP file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open project files. Because only the current version supports the latest PAP file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available PapDesigner update.
- To make sure that your PAP file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .PAP file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
