All about PBC Files
The PBC file type is primarily associated with Various.
What is a PBC file?
- KeyDB Database Backup: This file is used to back up a KeyDB database. The file holds the database’s state in a proprietary format. More technical details are available at KeyDB documentation.
- Profibus Configuration: Here the file stores settings for Profibus industrial communication. It uses a Microsoft Compound format. For further information see Profibus.
- Compressed Poser Character File: This variant holds compressed data for 3D character models used with Poser software.
- UCC License / Parking Ticket File: In some cases, the file contains licensing details for UCC systems or may even be linked with Hungarian parking ticket processing. The content changes with the intended application.
- Proofpoint Backup Configuration: This file is used to store configuration settings for Proofpoint backup systems, including setups for tap backup and email archiving. More info can be found at Proofpoint Support.
- Phonebook Contact File: This version is used by Palm Desktop to store encrypted contact data, sometimes labeled as PBCopy, securing personal information.
FilExt.com note: The exact way to open or view a PBC file is to use the original program that created it. Always keep a backup before modifying the file and use proper tools if conversion is needed.
How can I open a PBC file?
You need a suitable software like Various to open a PBC file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PBC file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PBC file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert PBC files:
- Various
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. PBC files are often referred to as Various data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Parrot (Compiled Byte Code File) by The Perl FoundationParrot is a virtual machine designed to efficiently compile and execute bytecode for dynamic languages. Parrot currently hosts a variety of language implementations in various stages of completion, including Tcl, Javascript, Ruby, Lua, Scheme, PHP, Python, Perl 6, APL, and a .NET bytecode translator. The Mime types used with this association are: application/x-bytecode.parrot.
PBC file format:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our examination of the PBC files comes to the following conclusion:
PBC is not a common file extension and is used by different programs with different formats. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 25% of all PBC files start with the bytes PGDMP crucial for this file format. These files are text files, so they contain words and text. Most of these files are 2 MB to 4 MB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as ENCODING, KeyDB, PGDMP and SET client_encoding = 'UTF8';. A common filename is DBBackup_20180601.pbc.
- 20% of all PBC files internally use the Microsoft Compound File format, known also as OLE2 Compound Document format or Composite Document File format. Compound document files work similarly to real file systems. They contain a number of independent data streams (like files in a file system) which are organized in a hierarchy of containers (like sub-directories in a file system). Compound files begin always with signature bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1 (ÐÏࡱá). The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are often between 11 KB and 680 KB in size. Such files are related to network, configuration, highspeed and slot.
The remaining 55% of all PBC files are files with no common format, the following 5 formats can be found: Parrot ByteCode, PBC and Salted. They are often associated with instance, report or check. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your PBC file!
Technical Data for PBC File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.
EXEFile: %ProgramFiles%\PCzapper\MEDIAM~1\pbConfig.exe /C%1
a pbc data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with PBC files
- Associate the PBC file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest PBC file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Various update.
- To make sure that your PBC file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .PBC file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
