What is a PEC file?

PEC files mostly belong to Silhouette Studio. A PEC file can serve different functions depending on the originating software.
For embroidery, a PEC file is a Brother embroidery design file that holds stitch instructions, layout details, and pattern data. It works with embroidery machines and programs such as Silhouette Studio (Silhouette America).
In furniture design, a PEC file may be a compressed archive (using ZIP) containing a 3D model and related assets. This type is handled by software like pCon.planner (pCon.planner).
Some PEC files are also used to store configuration data for photo editing programs. They save settings that control editor behavior.

Examine the file using a text editor to spot clues in its content.

If the file seems to be an archive, try renaming it with a .zip extension and extract it.

How to open PEC files

You need a suitable software like Silhouette Studio to open a PEC file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our examination of the PEC files comes to the following conclusion:

An PEC file includes various formats for various programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 25% of all PEC files are Brother/Babylock/Bernina Home Embroidery format files. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are often between 5 KB and 64 KB in size. The file type is very old but is also used today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as PEC0001LA. Such files are related to logo.
• 10% of all PEC files use ZIP compression, i.e. a PEC file contains several compressed files. 1 to 127 compressed files with names like document.dwg, pec.xml, preview.jpg and \resources\ are common. Tip: If you rename the file ending to .zip and then double-click it, you see the included files and images. The files are often between 33 KB and 84 MB in size. The files contain the following words: document.dwg.
