All about PGF Files
The PGF file type is primarily associated with libPGF.
What is a PGF file?
How to open a PGF file
You need a suitable software like libPGF to open a PGF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PGF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PGF file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert PGF files:
- libPGF by xeraina GmbH
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. PGF files are often referred to as libPGF raster images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- GPS Pathfinder Office (geoid grid data) by TrinbleGPS Pathfinder Office is a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) data processing software. It stores geoid grid models in PGF files. A geoid model file contains a mathematical definition of the difference between WGS-84 height and local height above mean sea level (MSL). This file format is classified as GIS.
- Matplotlib (figure) by John D. HunterMatplotlib is a data plotting library for embedding static, animated, and interactive visualizations into applications written in Python programming language. The PGF backend component of Matplotlib can export figures as PGF drawing commands which may be used in pdflatex, Xelatex, or Lualatex. This file format is classified as Raster Image.
- PowerGREP (file selection) by JGsoft - Just Great SoftwarePowerGREP is a tool for quickly searching through large volumes of text and binary files. It can perform complex text and binary replacement operations. File selections created by PowerGREP are saved in PGF files. This file format is classified as Data.
- XnView (compressed bitmap image) by XnSoftXnView is a cross-platform image manipulation software that supports over 500 image file types. This tool can be used to view, edit, and convert PGF images created by programs on the discontinued Atari palmtop operating system. This file format is classified as Raster Image. PGF file format:
To find out what program is needed to open PGF files, you need to determine the file format. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below you will find our evaluation of the PGF files:
The PGF file ending includes different formats for the applicable programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 40% of all PGF files use the same file format, which have the signature %% Creator: Matplotlib, PGF backend. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. The files are 1 KB to 240 KB in size, with a median of 33 KB. The file type is a fairly new file format. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as %% \input{<filename>.pgf}, %% Creator: Matplotlib, PGF backend, %% Make sure the required packages are loaded in your preamble, %% To include the figure in your LaTeX document, write and %% \usepac. An example of a file name is histogram.pgf. Files like these are about figure and results.
- 15% of all PGF files use the same file format, which have the signature 00 00. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are 37 KB to 1 MB in size, with a median of 72 KB. The keywords PGF0, Regular and NewRodin are typical for these files. A common filename is jpn0.pgf or ltn0.pgf. Such PGF files store data about letters and arib.
All other PGF files (45%) have no consistent format, such as ABB RobotStudio Program File, TIFF and PGF. Sometimes used for vectorian, program, bitmap or data. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your PGF file!
Technical Data for PGF File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.

a pgf image is a special file format by xeraina GmbH and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with PGF files
- Associate the PGF file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open images. Because only the current version supports the latest PGF file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the xeraina GmbH manufacturer website after an available libPGF update.
- To make sure that your PGF file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .PGF file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
