Opening a PNP File
The PNP file type is primarily associated with PnP PowerShell.
What is a PNP file?
For example, the most common use is as a SharePoint Provisioning Template created by PnP PowerShell. This file uses a ZIP container format to store site configuration data for Microsoft SharePoint. You can find more information on this at PnP PowerShell.

How to open a PNP file
You need a suitable software like PnP PowerShell to open a PNP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PNP file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PNP file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert PNP files:
- PnP PowerShell
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. PNP files are often referred to as PnP PowerShell compresseds because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- PEERNET Publisher by PEERNET Inc.

PNP file format:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our examination of the PNP files comes to the following conclusion:
The file type with the extension 'PNP' is used by different programs with different formats. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 40% of all PNP files are based on the zip format, multiple files are compressed and combined into one PNP file. A PNP file can contain up to 100 files (mostly 9 - 60). File names inside are [Content_Types].xml, files.origin and manifest.xml. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. The file size is in the range of 6 KB to 18 MB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as manifest.xml. The following filename is common: starterkit.pnp or Template.pnp. Such PNP files store data about site, customer and workflow.
- 15% of all PNP files save the data in CAP file format. CAP files are compressed archives. The first bytes (the signature) are 'MSCF' (short for MicroSoft Cabinet File). The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are often between 3 MB and 11 MB in size. The keywords MSCF, Boot\BCD.LOG and Boot\BCD.LOG1 are typical for these files. Files like these are about pnpstate and drivers.
All other PNP files (45%) have different formats, often, for example, JFIF, PNSPLDOC, BOF, Report and CAD. Sometimes used for lhcsa, statewide, family, home or care. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your PNP file!
Technical Data for PNP File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.

a pnp template is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with PNP files
- Associate the PNP file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open templates. Because only the current version supports the latest PNP file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available PnP PowerShell update.
- To make sure that your PNP file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .PNP file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
