What is a PPAM file

PPAM files mostly belong to Microsoft PowerPoint. PPAM files are PowerPoint Add-In Macro enabled files. They are created for Microsoft PowerPoint to extend its functionality by providing additional commands and automation through macros.
This file is built with a ZIP archive format which contains VBA macros and supporting files that PowerPoint uses to add features in the background.

How to open PPAM files

You need a suitable software like Microsoft PowerPoint to open a PPAM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. PPAM file format:

The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our examination of the PPAM files comes to the following conclusion:

The PPAM file ending is mainly used by one program with a specific format. The two most popular formats are as follows:

90% of all PPAM files use ZIP compression, i.e. a PPAM file contains several compressed files. A PPAM file contains 5 to 30 files, the average being 7. File names are e.g. [Content_Types].xml, \_rels\.rels, \ppt\_rels\presentation.xml.rels, \ppt\presentation.xml and \ppt\vbaProject.bin. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. The files are on average 62 KB in size and range from 8 KB to 630 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: [Content_Types].xml. Such files sometimes refer to macro, ribbon, tools, toolbar, point, powerpoint, power and slide.
2% of all PPAM files are based on the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also called Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. Microsoft Compound File is a complex container format used by some versions of Microsoft Office and other Windows-centric applications. It has features similar to those of a filesystem format. The first 8 bytes of the CFB format are D0CF11E0A1B11AE1 (which looks like "DOCFILE"). The app name of a PPAM file is Microsoft Office PowerPoint. The CLSID (class identifier of a Windows component object) is 817246f0-720a-11cf-8718-00aa0060263b. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The file size is in the range of 60 KB to 170 KB.

How to solve problems with PPAM files

Associate the PPAM file extension with the correct application.
