What is a PPK file

PPK files mostly belong to PuTTY by Simon Tatham. A PPK file is a private or public key that PuTTY uses to verify users remotely connecting to a host over SSH or Telnet. The file contains hashed text similar to those generated by cryptography applications like OpenSSL. PuTTY is a Secure Shell (SSH) and Telnet communication client for Windows operating system. When connecting to an SSH or Telnet server on a different host, its PuTTYgen component generates a PPK key used to ensure secure client-server communication by authenticating the PPK key against a private key on the server machine.

How to open a PPK file

You need a suitable software like PuTTY to open a PPK file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PPK file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PPK file directly in the browser:. PPK file format details:

The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below is our analysis of the PPK files:

The PPK file type mainly uses a defined PPK format. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 85% of all PPK files are associated with PuTTY Private Key. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. The files are often between 1.4 KB and 2 KB in size. The file type is relatively new. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. NzaC, AAAAB, PuTTY-User-Key-File-2: ssh-rsa, Public-Lines: 6, Encryption: none and Comment: imported-openssh-key. These files are often associated with qwiklabs, private, privatekey, sftp, sshkey, prod, lightsail, newkey, server, putty and priv.
• 5% of all PPK files are based on the zip format, so several files are combined and compressed into one PPK file. A typical number of included files is 53. If you want to see the included files and images, simply rename the file extension to .zip and double-click it. Most of these files are 190 KB to 20 MB in size. Such PPK files store data about portraits.
