Opening a PPK File

The PPK file type is primarily associated with PuTTY.

PPKFile Extension PPK
File extension: PPK
File type:  private/public key

What is a PPK file

PPK files mostly belong to PuTTY by Simon Tatham. A PPK file is a private or public key that PuTTY uses to verify users remotely connecting to a host over SSH or Telnet. The file contains hashed text similar to those generated by cryptography applications like OpenSSL. PuTTY is a Secure Shell (SSH) and Telnet communication client for Windows operating system. When connecting to an SSH or Telnet server on a different host, its PuTTYgen component generates a PPK key used to ensure secure client-server communication by authenticating the PPK key against a private key on the server machine.

How to open a PPK file

You need a suitable software like PuTTY to open a PPK file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PPK file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PPK file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert PPK files:

  1. PuTTY by Simon Tatham
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. PPK files are often referred to as PuTTY miscs because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. 7-Zip (compressed archive) by Igor Pavlov
7-Zip is a cross-platform file compression and encryption program. It can open and unpack a PPK file saved in ZIP archive compression format. This file format is classified as Compressed.

PPK file format details:

The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below is our analysis of the PPK files:

The PPK file type mainly uses a defined PPK format. The two most common formats are as follows:

All other PPK files (10%) have no consistent format, often, for example, KEY. The category is public. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your PPK file!

How to solve problems with PPK files

  • Associate the PPK file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open private/public keys. Because only the current version supports the latest PPK file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Simon Tatham manufacturer website after an available PuTTY update.
  • To make sure that your PPK file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .PPK file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
