What is a PROTO file?

PROTO files mostly belong to Protobuf by Google. A PROTO file contains protocol buffers saved in Google's Protobuf data interchange format. Programming and data processing environments use protocol buffers as part of their toolkit for serializing structured data and then saving it in a PROTO file. The Protobuf toolkit available on Protobuf's GitHub repository provides a compiler and runtime for PROTO. It supports C++/C#, Objective-C, Java, PHP, Python, JavaScript, Go, and Dart. Serialization is the process of converting a data structure to a string. Protobuf provides an extensible data serialization solution developed as an alternative to XML.

How to open a PROTO file

You need a suitable software like Protobuf to open a PROTO file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. PROTO file format:

To find out what program is needed to open PROTO files, you need to determine the file format.
