All about PROTO Files

The PROTO file type is primarily associated with Protobuf.

PROTOFile Extension PROTO
File extension: PROTO
File type:  serialized data

What is a PROTO file?

PROTO files mostly belong to Protobuf by Google. A PROTO file contains protocol buffers saved in Google's Protobuf data interchange format. Programming and data processing environments use protocol buffers as part of their toolkit for serializing structured data and then saving it in a PROTO file. The Protobuf toolkit available on Protobuf's GitHub repository provides a compiler and runtime for PROTO. It supports C++/C#, Objective-C, Java, PHP, Python, JavaScript, Go, and Dart. Serialization is the process of converting a data structure to a string. Protobuf provides an extensible data serialization solution developed as an alternative to XML.

How to open a PROTO file

You need a suitable software like Protobuf to open a PROTO file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PROTO file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PROTO file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert PROTO files:

  1. Protobuf by Google
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. PROTO files are often referred to as Protobuf developers because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. Amaya (data) by W3C & INRIA
Amaya is a discontinued structured data editor available as a web app and a desktop program. It uses some data saved in a PROTO file. This file format is classified as Data.

PROTO file format:

To find out what program is needed to open PROTO files, you need to determine the file format. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. In the following you will find our evaluation of the PROTO files:

The PROTO extension is quite commonly used. The file itself is used by many programs, each with its own file format. The two most common formats are as follows:

All other PROTO files (80%) have no consistent format. They are often associated with critical, window, flinger, surface, stats or report. If you want to find out which format your PROTO file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .proto file to analyze".

How to solve problems with PROTO files

  • Associate the PROTO file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open serialized data files. Because only the current version supports the latest PROTO file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Google manufacturer website after an available Protobuf update.
  • To make sure that your PROTO file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .PROTO file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
