Opening PSW Files
The PSW file type is primarily associated with PaintShop.
What is a PSW file?
How to open PSW files
You need a suitable software like PaintShop to open a PSW file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PSW file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PSW file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

PSW format details:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our analysis of the PSW files produces the following result:
The PSW file ending mainly uses a defined PSW format. The following file formats are most commonly found in PSW files:
- 70% of all PSW files are Windows XP Backup Password files. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. A typical file size is 1 KB. The file type is old but is used even today. The keywords MSRB and RSA2 are typical for these files. An example of a file name is userkey.psw. Files like these are about password and reset.
- 20% of all PSW files belong to Pocket Word document. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are on average 4 KB in size and range from 580 bytes to 31 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: {\pwi and Tahoma.
The remaining 10% of all PSW files are different files with different signatures. Just click the "Choose your .psw file to view" button on this page to find out what your PSW file is.
