What is a CONTACT file?

CONTACT files mostly belong to Windows Address Books by Microsoft Corporation. CONTACT file format is associated with Windows Contacts application, the in-built contact management application developed by Microsoft Corporation and is present by default on computers running on Microsoft Windows operating system.

  • Use: Windows Contacts application allows users to save information pertaining to an individual such as the First name, Last name, Photo, Email address, Home Address, Work Address, Details of Family members, and other notes in one place using a CONTACT file. This information is saved in the CONTACT file in an XML format. CONTACT files are automatically stored using the Full Name field information entered while filling the details of the individual. If the image of the person is also added in the CONTACT file, Windows Contacts uses the photo as the display image. All the CONTACT files are generally stored in the \Users\[USERNAME]\Contacts by default. The CONTACT files can be exported to other popular contact formats such as VCF and CSF from the Windows Explorer menu in the \Users\[USERNAME]\Contacts directory on the Windows PC.
  • Adoption: CONTACT files can be created and opened using the Windows Contacts application which is present by default on Windows PCs running on Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, and Windows Vista operating systems.
