Opening a PXE File

The PXE file type is primarily associated with iPXE.

PXEFile Extension PXE
File extension: PXE
File type:  system configuration file

What is a PXE file?

PXE files mostly belong to iPXE.

The PXE file is not a single‐purpose file but can serve several distinct functions. It is often used as a Preboot Execution Environment (PXE) file for network boot operations. In other scenarios the same extension appears in different industries.
For example, various use cases include:

  • PXE Boot Configuration: This file may contain network boot instructions used by programs such as iPXE or PXElinux. Often these are text or binary files that set parameters for launching an operating system over a network. See more details on the iPXE webpage.
  • Medical Imaging: In some cases the file holds an X‐ray image, for example as used by DetectorsApp and settings related to Elekta Synergy Agility or Varian Medical Systems oncology systems.
  • Pixel Art Image: There are instances where the extension is used for pixel art images, although this is less common in a system boot context.
  • Calibration Measurement Projects: The file can also store data for calibration procedures, as seen with MET/TEAM Calibration Software. More on this is available at the FlukeCal website.

Each use case requires the correct tool to open and view its contents.
If the file is part of a network boot setup, it should be managed with boot loaders or network configuration tools.
If it holds imaging or calibration data, a specialized viewer or editor may be required.
FilExt.com note: Inspecting the file header with a text editor can help determine its function and the proper application to use.

How to open PXE files

You need a suitable software like iPXE to open a PXE file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PXE file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PXE file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

How to solve problems with PXE files

  • Associate the PXE file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open system configuration files. Because only the current version supports the latest PXE file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available iPXE update.
  • To make sure that your PXE file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .PXE file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
