What is a QFS file?

QFS files mostly belong to GIMX. QFS files have different functions depending on their origin.
They can be game data files used by GIMX. In this role, the files hold game assets and configuration details. For more information, visit the GIMX blog.
They also serve as a GE bootloader file. In this case the file acts as a boot image (often called a Quest File System image) that is used during system startup processes.
Additionally, QFS files may be QuickForm spreadsheet files used by Quicken. These files are sometimes referred to as Quest Financial Suite files. More details can be found on the Quicken website.

Identify the source: Check if the file is part of a game, a boot process, or financial software.

Use the correct tool: Open game files with the game engine, boot files with appropriate diagnostic tools, and spreadsheet files with Quicken.

How to open QFS files

You need a suitable software like GIMX to open a QFS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your QFS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a QFS file directly in the browser:. QFS file format:

To find out what program is needed to open QFS files, you need to determine the file format. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our analysis of the QFS files produces the following result:

QFS is not a commonly used file extension and mainly uses a defined QFS format. The file formats most commonly found in QFS files are:

• 85% of all QFS files start with the bytes 10 FB, which are crucial for this file format. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The file size is in the range of 36 KB to 460 KB. The file type was used 20 years ago. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as SHPI and GIMX. Files like these are about airc, credits, lastrec, dash, load, sljxkr, lotus, nazca and army.
• 8% of all QFS files have the same signature EB 25 90 DA 00 00 00 00. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The file size is in the range of 11 MB to 260 MB. The files contain the following words: Hit Esc for .altboot. A usual file name is GEDUMPER.QFS or LOCOROOT.QFS. These files are attributed to histdata.
