Opening an RD File
The RD file type is primarily associated with RDWorks.
What is an RD file?
An example is the use of RD files for laser cutting. In this case, the file holds design instructions and cutting paths used by machines controlled with RDWorks. These files are often in a binary format, sometimes called the "Binary Rosetta Stone file," and may even include data used in 3D printing. More details are available at forum.laseruser.com.

FilExt.com tips: Opening or editing an RD file requires using the software that originally created it. The file may be a simple text file encoded in UTF-8 or a compressed binary container. Misidentifying its source may lead to unreadable content.
How to open RD files
You need a suitable software like RDWorks to open an RD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your RD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a RD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert RD files:
- RDWorks
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. RD files are often referred to as RDWorks data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Captivate (Project File) by Macromedia, Inc.Captivate used to be called RoboDemo. Captivate allows you to record any application and enhance the recording with text, animations, audio, and interactivity to create training simulations and product demonstrations. This file type has mixed content: Images, Audio, Video. Contains all the elements of a Captivate Project.
- MDL Molfile (Reaction File) by MDL Information Systems, Inc.Elsevier MDL provides scientific content, informatics framework and workflow applications that accelerate life sciences R&D by improving the speed and quality of scientists' decision making. The identifying characters used for this association are - Hex: 24 52 44 46 49 4C 45 20, ASCII: $RDFILE.
- Philips Raw Data(crystalography related)
RD file format:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our examination of the RD files comes to the following conclusion:
The RD extension is very commonly used. This RD file itself is among the most popular common file types and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The following file formats are most commonly found in RD files:
- 30% of all RD files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "D2 9B" at the beginning. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are 1 KB to 240 KB in size, with a median of 29 KB. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today.
- 20% of all RD files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "V3RD" at the beginning. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are often between 3 KB and 9 KB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: Unknown, Theta and V3RDConfiguration. These files are attributed to sample.
The remaining 50% of all RD files are files with no common format, such as R documentation, Reaction Data, UTF-8, zlib, GZIP and MXgt. They are often associated with recibo, definitivo, package, acta, data or ineq. You can get all the details of your RD file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .rd file to analyze" above.

How to solve problems with RD files
- Associate the RD file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open versatile data containers. Because only the current version supports the latest RD file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available RDWorks update.
- To make sure that your RD file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .RD file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
