What is a README file?

README files mostly belong to Notepad by Microsoft. README is one of the filename extensions of a text file containing an application's documentation or description. README files distributed with a program contain installation/startup or troubleshooting instructions for such a program. A README file is usually written in plain text but it is sometimes written in Markdown syntax or Extensible Markup Language. This is similar to the Readme.md file containing the description/documentation of an application project hosted on GitHub. Any plain text editor can be used to create, edit, or read a README file.

How to open README files

You need a suitable software like Notepad to open a README file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your README file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a README file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

README file format details:

To view or edit README files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Below you will find our evaluation of the README files:
