What is a RESOURCE file?

RESOURCE files mostly belong to Unity Editor. RESOURCE files are not plain text files but data containers used to package and deliver application assets.
They are most often used in game development, especially with the Unity engine. In this role the files hold game data such as textures, models, audio, and other resources. They form part of Unity Asset Bundles, which you can read about at Unity Asset Bundles.
Some RESOURCE files use the MP4 format to store video streams or application data, while others work as compressed archives (in ZIP format) for static website content on platforms like Salesforce (Salesforce Component Library).
They are also found in alternative gaming networks such as ALT:V and FiveM where the same extension is used to handle game asset packages.

Game Asset Container: Used in Unity and similar game engines.

Video and Data Holder: Can embed MP4 video content or act as a container for application-specific data.

Compressed Archive: Sometimes structured as a ZIP file for web-related data.

How to open RESOURCE files

You need a suitable software like Unity Editor to open a RESOURCE file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. In the following you will find our evaluation of the RESOURCE files:

RESOURCE is a very widely used file extension. The file type mainly uses a defined RESOURCE format. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 80% of all RESOURCE files are associated with Unity 3d Assets. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are 31 KB to 140 MB in size, with a median of 5 MB. It is a modern file type. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. FSB5. A common filename is resources.resource or sharedassets0.resource. Such files are related to bdfbba, globalgamemanagers, change, audio and sound.
• 7% of all RESOURCE files start with the magic bytes ALT, which are always the first bytes of this file format. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are on average 10 MB in size and range from 9 KB to 93 MB. The keywords DJp[ are typical for these files. Such files sometimes refer to custom, ressource, mapping, homestate, clothes, dealer, admin, props and solrp.

All other RESOURCE files (13%) have different formats, such as MP4, ZIP, MKV and DATA. These files are often connected to data, lcins, pdfjs, theme or book.
