What is a RIF file?

RIF files mostly belong to Painter by Corel. RIF filename extension is associated with paintings and raster images created with Painter, a digital painting software developed by Corel. Such RIF files contain brush strokes, illustrations, color data, and other graphics data saved in RIFF format. Revit, a building information modeling software, exports mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) models/data in RIF (Revit Export File) format. The exported RIF data can be imported and used in Fabrication MEP estimation software. RIF is also the filename extension of debugging/support dump files generated by the RouterOS operating system on MicroTik routers. FRAMES, a risk assessment and management software platform, uses RIF files to store receptor intake data. 2, 3, and 4-bit mono sounds stored in the (ADPCM) audio format used to record and store audio samples on some Rockwell devices have RIF extension. MIDI audio files stored in a RIFF wrapper using WildMIDI audio synthesizer library also have RIF filename extension sometimes.

How do you open RIF files?

You need a suitable software like Painter to open a RIF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your RIF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a RIF file directly in the browser:. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. 50% of all RIF files are Painter Raster Image Format bitmap files. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. A typical file size is 3 MB. 15% of all RIF files are using the well-known RIFF file format to store the data. RIFF files store data in tagged chunks. There are primarily used to store multimedia such as sound and video. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. RIF files are between 1 KB and 20 MB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. RIFF and data. These files can be linked to riff.
