All about RIX Files
The RIX file type is primarily associated with RIX3/MiePlot.
What is a RIX file?
Another variant functions as an optical constants material data file. This type is used with simulation software, like MiePlot, to hold material data for light scattering analysis. Details of this application are available on the MiePlot webpage.
How to open RIX files
You need a suitable software like RIX3/MiePlot to open a RIX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your RIX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a RIX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

- RIX3/MiePlot
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. RIX files are often referred to as RIX3/MiePlot raster images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.

RIX file format:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. In the following you will find our evaluation of the RIX files:
The RIX file extension is not common and is primarily used by a single program. The following file formats are most commonly found in RIX files:
- 70% of all RIX files are associated with ColoRIX bitmap. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. RIX files are between 300 KB and 46 MB in size. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as RIX3. An example of a file name is splash0.rix or SPLASH5.RIX. Such files sometimes refer to screen.
- 15% of all RIX files start with the bytes MiePlot 300 Line 2: crucial for this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. The file size is in the range of 1 KB to 7 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Line 2, Line 3: This is line 3, MiePlot 300, Line 4: Do not modify lines 1 - 12, Constants, Optical, Line 5: Data starts at, Applied, Line 5: Data starts at line 13, Line 6 and Optics. Files like these are sometimes connected to silver, copper and gold, and include person-related information.
All the rest of the RIX files (15%) have different formats. You can get all the details of your RIX file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .rix file to view this image" above.
Technical Data for RIX File Extension

a rix raster image file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with RIX files
- Associate the RIX file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open raster image files. Because only the current version supports the latest RIX file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available RIX3/MiePlot update.
- To make sure that your RIX file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .RIX file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
