What is an RPY file?

RPY files mostly belong to Ren'Py by American Bishoujo. An RPY file is a script used to generate and control visual novels created with Ren'Py visual novel engine. This file contains source code written in Python programming language. RPY is also the filename extension of a custom resource used by Twisted Web HTTP server and template engine. A different RPY file is a Python-based macro for automating operations in Abaqus/CAE. RPY is also the filename extension of scripts written in a dialect of Python which can be executed by RPython dynamic programming language translation and support framework. Replays of Touchou Project games are saved in RPY files.

How to open an RPY file

You need a suitable software like Ren'Py to open an RPY file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your RPY file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a RPY file directly in the browser:. Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. The RPY extension is very commonly found and is used by different programs with different formats. The file formats most commonly found in RPY files are:

• 25% of all RPY files internally utilize the UTF-8 file format. UTF-8 is the World Wide Web's most common character encoding for Unicode. UTF-8 files can be viewed with any text editor. These files start with the 3 bytes  (hex: EF BB BF), the so called byte order mark (BOM). These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. The files are 2 KB to 84 KB in size, with a median of 21 KB. The file type is relatively new. The files contain the following words: this, free, software, Copyright and PyTom. The file name 00console.rpy or script.rpy is typical for these files. These files are often associated with console, gallery, screens, options, images, action, menu and start.
• 20% of all RPY files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "label " at the beginning. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. The files are often between 2 KB and 160 KB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: label, scene and with. These files are attributed to chapter, events, scenes, scene, after, story and home.

All other RPY files (55%) have different formats, the following 30 formats exist: NASCAR Racing 4 Replay, init, def, image, screen, RPY, Dreams, label and version.
