What is an RTK file?

RTK files mostly belong to Recipe Keeper.

RTK files are used in two main ways. Some files store recipe backups in a compressed (ZIP) format, while others hold GNSS base station data used for real-time kinematic (RTK) GPS surveys.

• Recipe Backup Files:
  These files are created by applications like Recipe Keeper (and by RecetteTek) to back up recipe collections. They use the ZIP compression format. You can open these with any archive tool or the dedicated Recipe Keeper software.

• RTK GPS Data Files:
  In other cases, RTK files store GNSS base station data used for high-precision RTK surveys. They contain raw measurements that specialized GNSS software processes.

How to open RTK files

You need a suitable software like Recipe Keeper to open an RTK file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your RTK file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a RTK file directly in the browser:. RTK file format:

The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our examination of the RTK files comes to the following conclusion:

The RTK file ending covers different formats for different programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in RTK files:

• 35% of all RTK files use the ZIP algorithm, the RTK file contains a number of compressed files. An RTK file can contain up to 210 files (mostly 1 - 130). Common included file names are recipes_1.json. If you'd like to see the images and files included, just rename the file extension to .zip and double-click. The files are 1 KB to 15 MB in size, with a median of 1 MB. The following keywords are characteristic: categories.json. A usual file name is backup_2020-06-01.rtk or myrecipebox_2020-06-01.rtk. These files are attributed to myrecipes.
• 9% of all RTK files start with the bytes Rem Version , which are crucial for this file format. These files are text files, so they contain words and text. A typical file size is 8 KB. The files contain the following words: BaseStation, PDAID, Rem Version   android_egstar3 Ver, android_egstar3 Ver, EGStar3.0 Ver and Rem Version   EGStar3. 20180601.RTK is a typical file name.
