What is an SCAR file?

SCAR files mostly belong to PKWARE. SCAR files are used as a Software Component Archive that stores multiple software files inside a single compressed container.
These archives use the ZIP format internally. This means you can open a SCAR file with most ZIP utilities.

If your system does not recognize the SCAR extension, try renaming it to .zip.

This format groups related software components for easier distribution and deployment.

It is used in environments where components need to be packaged, such as in Automation Studio setups.

How to open an SCAR file

You need a suitable software like PKWARE to open an SCAR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SCAR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SCAR file directly in the browser:. The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the SCAR files looks like this:

The SCAR file extension is rarely used and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 60% of all SCAR files use the ZIP format, so multiple files are compressed and stored together in one SCAR file. An SCAR file can contain up to 190 files (mostly 8 - 130). File names inside are always changelog.txt, \SCRIPT-INF\read-technical-resource.properties, \SCRIPT-INF\script.properties, \images\, \interfaces\, \properties\, \scripts\global.functions.xml and \scripts\scripting.xsd. If you'd like to see the images and files included, just rename the file extension to .zip and double-click. SCAR files are between 16 KB and 9 MB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as SCRIPT-INF/PK, images/PK and interfaces/PK. Examples of file names are service.scar or verify.r006.v20180601.scar. These files can be linked to read, module and fiber.
• 9% of all SCAR files start with the magic bytes ----------------------------------------------, which are always the first bytes of this file format. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. A typical file size is 16 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. ------------. An example of a file name is World_Race_Themes.scar. Such files sometimes refer to race, themes and world.
