Opening SDO Files
The SDO file type is primarily associated with Visma Addo.
What is an SDO file
The SDO files are not a single standard format. Instead, they are used by different companies to store digital documents and data in a secure format.
For example, consider the following cases:
- XML Signed Document: Over half of the SDO files use an XML structure to store a secure, digitally signed document. This is often called a Secure Digital Object file and is produced by Visma Addo. Its structure helps verify digital signatures and preserves document integrity.
- Solartron Data File: A smaller share is used by IviumSoft. These files, sometimes known as Scientific Data Output, serve to store measurement data from scientific instruments. More details can be found at IviumSoft.
- Smart Document Format (ZIP-based): Some SDO files are archives (ZIP containers) that package a Smart Document. They may contain elements similar to those in StarOffice/OpenOffice Draw. For more information, visit SmartDocuments.
- SilverDoc Document: A few of these files are created as SilverDoc documents used for design purposes, including sewing design files produced by Stitch Era.
- PDF Document: A minor portion is formatted as PDF, created by HP Exstream, and intended for PDF readers. Additional details are available at HP Exstream.
FilExt.com tip: Because the internal format of an SDO file depends on its origin, you should check the file’s properties to decide which application is needed to open it. Use XML or specialized viewers for signed documents, ZIP tools for smart document archives, and a PDF reader when the file contains PDF data.
How can I open an SDO file?
You need a suitable software like Visma Addo to open an SDO file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SDO file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SDO file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

SDO file format:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the SDO files looks like this:
SDO is not a commonly used file extension and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 50% of all SDO files are using the well-known XML file format to store the data. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The average file size is 170 KB with most files being between 66 KB and 460 KB in size. The file type is relatively new. The files contain the following words: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><SDOList xmlns="http://www.npt.no/seid/xmlskjema/SDO_v1.0" xmlns:XAdES="http://uri.etsi.org/01903/v1.2.2#" xmlns:ds="http://www.w3.org/2000/09/xmldsig#" xmlns:xsi. Such files sometimes refer to avtal, kontrakt, avtale, signert, pantedokument, allmenne, aftale and vilk.
- 10% of all SDO files start with the magic bytes 01 00 00 00, which are always the first bytes of this file format. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The file size is in the range of 18 KB to 8 MB.
All other SDO files (40%) have no uniform format, such as Signum! Document, IEEE DASC Standard Delay Format, ZIP and PDF. Files like these are sometimes linked to detail, dokument, fast, kredittavtale, annotation, blankett, kreditt or object. If you want to find out what your SDO file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with SDO files
- Associate the SDO file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open digital document files. Because only the current version supports the latest SDO file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Visma Addo update.
- To make sure that your SDO file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .SDO file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
