What is a SED file?

SED files mostly belong to Sed by Free Software Foundation. A SED file is a script written in the language used by Stream Editor (Sed) text manipulation program. A SED script contains commands and regular expressions used to edit, filter, replace/transform, and extract text fragments in a text document. Another type of SED file is a self-extraction directive which IExpress Wizard uses to create Windows self-extracting package (EXE) files. The contents of a self-extraction directive are stored as text. They include a list of all files to be included in a package, popup messages etc. SED is also the filename extension of seed files for designs exported by Civil 3D.

How to open SED files

You need a suitable software like Sed to open a SED file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SED file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SED file directly in the browser:. To view or edit SED files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our evaluation of the SED files looks like this:

SED is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type is used by different programs with different formats. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 45% of all SED files use the same file format, which have the signature SE. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. SED files are between 280 bytes and 9 MB in size. The file type was created recently. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as SEED. A common filename is Movable.sed or movable (1).sed.
• 15% of all SED files start with the bytes Comment:, which are crucial for this file format. These files are text files, so they contain words and text. The average file size is 37 KB with most files being between 12 KB and 43 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. File Name, Instrument, Version, Comment, Date, Measurement: REFLECTANCE, Detectors: 512,256,256, Storage, Card, Users and Desktop.
