How to open an SF3 file
You need a suitable software like Proteome Discoverer to open an SF3 file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SF3 file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SF3 file directly in the browser:. Programs that open and convert SF3 files:
- Proteome Discoverer
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. SF3 files are often referred to as Proteome Discoverer databases because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.

SF3 file format:
The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. In the following you will find our evaluation of the SF3 files:
The SF3 file ending includes different formats for the applicable programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 65% of all SF3 files use the popular SQL file format. An SQL file contains a lightweight SQLite database, widely used in application development for storing application related data. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. A typical file size is 65 MB. The file type is relatively new. The files contain the following words: SQLite format 3 and indexProteinGroup. These files are often associated with scaffold, human, swiss, prot, condensed, samples, mouse and data, and usually contain person-related data.
- 25% of all SF3 files internally utilize the RIFF file format. RIFF files store data in tagged chunks. There are primarily used to store multimedia such as sound and video. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are on average 39 MB in size and range from 14 MB to 39 MB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as INAM, INFOifil, ISFT, isng, IPRD, SBAWE32, sfbkLIST, E-mu 10K2, Frank Wen, Michael Cowgill & S. Christian Collins - see license file for details, IENGR, RIFF, MuseScore_General v0.2 and RIFF$. The following filename is common: MuseScore_General.sf3 or FluidR3Mono_GM.sf3. Such files are related to general, score, muse, fluidr, mono and soundfont.
The remaining 10% of all SF3 files are files with no common format. Tagged as lcmsresults, resultados, analysis, results, trypsin or semi. You can get all the details of your SF3 file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .sf3 file to analyze" above.

an sf3 database file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with SF3 files
- Associate the SF3 file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open database files. Because only the current version supports the latest SF3 file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Proteome Discoverer update.
- To make sure that your SF3 file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .SF3 file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
