What is an SHT file?

SHT files mostly belong to MicroStation. SHT files can mean different things depending on the context.

MicroStation Drawing Sheet File: This file stores drawing sheet data used by MicroStation. It uses a Microsoft Compound internal format. More details are available on the Bentley website.

Star Wars Texture/Shader File: In some instances, an SHT file holds texture or shader information for games such as Star Wars: The Old Republic and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. More info can be found at the SWTOR website.

Euromac Punch File: Certain SHT files are used in sheet metal work by TopPunch. They contain data for punching or shaping metal components.

How to open SHT files

You need a suitable software like MicroStation to open an SHT file. SHT file format:

To find out what program is needed to open SHT files, you need to determine the file format. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the SHT files is as follows:

The SHT file extension is rather rarely used and includes many different file formats. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 15% of all SHT files use the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also known by the name OLE2 Compound Document Format or Composite Document File Format. Microsoft Compound File is a complex container format used by some versions of Microsoft Office and other Windows-centric applications. It has features similar to those of a filesystem format. Compound files always start with the bytes ÐÏࡱá (hex code D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1). Each SHT file has an application name, which is MicroStation or Power GEOPAK. There is also a CLSID, a globally-unique identifier of a COM (Component Object Model) object: db736a80-1556-11d1-9ea4-00aa00b515fb. The file contains sections that are named something like Dgn-Md, Dgn^Ix, Dgn~H, Dgn~S, DocumentSummaryInformation, SummaryInformation, Dgn^Nm, Dgn~Mf, Dgn^NmA and SebiesnrMkudrfcoIaamtykdDa. The files are on average 180 KB in size and range from 52 KB to 560 KB. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today.
• 8% of all SHT files use the popular config file format. A configuration file is used by computer software to store settings. It consists of a text-based content with a structure and syntax comprising key–value pairs for properties, and sections that organize the properties. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The file size is in the range of 2 KB to 10 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Job name, tplib version, punch_list = euromac.pl;, cs_x0 = 0.00000;, mt_list = euromac.mt;, cs_y0 = 0.00000;, Machine S/N, machine_sn, cs_ang = 0.00000; and mtx_turret = euromac.mtx;.

All other SHT files (77%) have no uniform format, the following 7 formats can be found: JetDB, WordPerfect, Version, FORM and Schematic.
