Opening an SMO File
The SMO file type is primarily associated with Nokia PC Suite.
What is an SMO file?
They can contain mobile SMS messages from Siemens Mobile Phone systems, typically managed with tools like Nokia PC Suite.
SMO files may also be used as 3D model files in gaming – for example, models for Bloomix or Age of Empires II – which are often edited in applications such as Autodesk 3D Studio Max (3ds Max Overview).
Other examples include:
- Game Audio: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater uses SMO files for music, related to the Bink Video format. More details can be found at Activision.
- Diagnostics and Simulation: Some SMO files function as log files for car diagnostics (e.g., ScanMyOpel data) or as output from simulation software like SIMIEN.
Which program to use depends on the file’s origin. For mobile messages, try Nokia PC Suite; for 3D models, a 3D editing tool is needed; for logs or simulation outputs, use specialized diagnostic software.
FilExt.com tip: Few users know that the same SMO extension is repurposed for unrelated data types due to legacy and proprietary system choices.
How to open an SMO file
You need a suitable software like Nokia PC Suite to open an SMO file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SMO file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SMO file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

SMO file format:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our analysis of the SMO files produces the following result:
The SMO file extension is rather rarely used and includes various formats for various programs. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 35% of all SMO files are Siemens archived SMS messages files. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. SMO files can be up to 800 bytes in size, but are often around 190 bytes - 360 bytes. The file type is very old and rarely used today.
- 20% of all SMO files have the same signature FFPS&. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The files are 350 KB to 610 KB in size, with a median of 500 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: FFPS&, Scene Root, model_root_master and bloom. The file name bloom_snow.smo is characteristic of these files. Such files are related to bloom and snow.
The remaining 45% of all SMO files are different files with different signatures, often e.g. BIKi. They are often associated with logging, scan, myopel, myopelcan, global, offspring or dmap. If you want to find out which format your SMO file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .smo file to analyze".

How to solve problems with SMO files
- Associate the SMO file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest SMO file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Nokia PC Suite update.
- To make sure that your SMO file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .SMO file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
