SREC file format details:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our examination of the SREC files comes to the following conclusion:
The SREC file extension predominantly uses a uniform format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 75% of all SREC files start with the magic bytes S0, which are always the first bytes of this file format. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. The files are often between 2 KB and 1 MB in size. The file type was developed only in the last few years. These files are often associated with image, micom, control, blinking, freedom, flash, guiapp, hello, world, demo and fuse.
- 6% of all SREC files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "S3" at the beginning. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. The average file size is 260 KB with most files being between 11 KB and 2 MB in size.
All the rest of the SREC files (19%) have different formats, often e.g. RKK. These files sometimes refer to boot, take, project, output or dump. If you want to find out which format your SREC file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .srec file to view".
