Opening SSW Files
The SSW file type is primarily associated with MegaMekLab.
What is an SSW file?
SSW files have two main uses. They can be XML-based game save files or CAD drawing files for welding.
For the game save type, the file uses XML to store game progress and configuration for MechWarrior games managed by MegaMekLab. This means the file is structured with XML tags and can be opened with a text or XML editor. More details can be found on the MegaMek website.
For the CAD type, the file holds design data such as welding details or CAD drawings. It is used by design software like SolidWorks and may be referred to as a SolidWorks CAD drawing or a specialized swivel CAD file. Further information is available on the SolidWorks website.
- XML Save File: Stores in-game data using XML structure.
- CAD Drawing File: Contains technical design information for welding and mechanical layouts.

SSW file format:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our examination of the SSW files comes to the following conclusion:
SSW is not a common file extension and is used by different programs with different formats. The file formats most commonly found in SSW files are:
- 40% of all SSW files use the popular XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files contain text and words, not binary data. SSW files are between 3 KB and 29 KB in size. The file type was developed only in the last few years. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as <?xml version="1.0" encoding ="UTF-8"?>, mech name, model, sswimage, tons, Images, ssw_savefile_version, No_Image, omnimech="FALSE" solaris7id="0" and solaris7id="0" solaris7imageid="0". Adder (Puma).ssw or Timber Wolf (Mad Cat).ssw is a typical file name. Files like these are about annihilator.
- 20% of all SSW files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "01 00 39 30" at the beginning. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. A typical file size is 1 MB.
The remaining 40% of all SSW files are files with no common format, often, for example, SETool encrypted firmware. Files like these are sometimes linked to lockheed, sswks, magic or probe. Just click the "Choose your .ssw file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your SSW file is.
Technical Data for SSW File Extension
an ssw Specialized data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with SSW files
- Associate the SSW file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open specialized data files. Because only the current version supports the latest SSW file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available MegaMekLab update.
- To make sure that your SSW file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
