What is an STN file

STN files mostly belong to ArcGIS by ESRI. STN filename extension is mainly associated with geocoding standardization data files used by ArcGIS geographic information system (GIS) software. These data files are stored in ASCII text format and they contain information such as standardization type, record ID, geocoding commands, and parameters for parsing commands. Flight Simulator, a series of flight simulation games and programs use some data saved in STN files. STN filename extension is also associated with vector images created using Photoshop raster graphics editor's Genuine Fractals (now Resize) plugin and saved in STiNG format. This type of STN file contains a resolution-independent copy of the source raster image. Resize, the newer iteration of Genuine Fractals does not support STN file format. Files encrypted by what is commonly called the Satan ransomware also have STN filename extension.

How can I open an STN file?

You need a suitable software like ArcGIS to open an STN file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. 20% of all STN files are associated with Genuine Fractals STING image. They consist of unreadable binary data. Most of these files are 2 KB to 21 MB in size. The files contain the following words: STNG. Files like these are about person-related data.
