Opening an STN File
The STN file type is primarily associated with ArcGIS.
What is an STN file
How can I open an STN file?
You need a suitable software like ArcGIS to open an STN file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your STN file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a STN file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert STN files:
- ArcGIS by ESRI
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. STN files are often referred to as ArcGIS gis because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Flight Simulator (data) by MicrosoftFlight Simulator is a series of flight simulation programs and games for Windows, Mac, and Xbox platforms. Some data used by Flight Simulator are saved in STN files. This file format is classified as Data.
- Genuine Fractals (image) by AdobeGenuine Fractals was a Photoshop raster graphics editor plugin. It was used to generate vector images from raster images imported into Photoshop. Vector images created with Genuine Fractals are saved in STN files. This file format is classified as Vector Image.
STN file format:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. In the following you will find our evaluation of the STN files:
An STN file is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 20% of all STN files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters " -999 -999 -999 -999 -999 -999 " at the beginning. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. The average file size is 220 MB with most files being between 24 MB and 240 MB in size. The file type is relatively new. The files contain the following words: -999 -999. The file name cru_ts2020-06-01.2020.pre.stn or cru_ts2020-06-01.2022.pre.stn is typical for these files.
- 20% of all STN files are associated with Genuine Fractals STING image. They consist of unreadable binary data. Most of these files are 2 KB to 21 MB in size. The files contain the following words: STNG. Files like these are about person-related data.
All other STN files (60%) have no uniform format, often, for example, STAN. Tagged as flight, base, starnet, rough, sarin, stone or demo. If you want to find out which format your STN file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .stn file to analyze".

an stn geocoding standardization is a special file format by ESRI and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with STN files
- Associate the STN file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open geocoding standardizations. Because only the current version supports the latest STN file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the ESRI manufacturer website after an available ArcGIS update.
- To make sure that your STN file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .STN file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
