What is a GAL file?

GAL files mostly belong to GenePix by Molecular Devices Corporation. GAL stands for GenePix Array List. GAL file type is associated with the GenePix Pro software package offered by Molecular Devices.

Main Use: Microarray technology is capable of extracting fluorescence measurements from thousands of features at once. It is necessary that each feature has the appropriate ID and name assigned for carrying out accurate analysis. GAL file format developed by Axon Instruments is used for this purpose. It aids in the description of the size and position of blocks, layout of feature-indicators consisted within, and the name and IDs of the printed substances linked with the respective feature-indicators. The names and locations (viz. sector, row, and column) of features existing on a microarray slide are saved in the GAL file. This data is useful in quantitative analysis of the fluorescent spots on microarrays.
Additional Information: The data in the GAL file format is saved in a tab-delimited and plain text form similar to that of the ATF (Axon Text File) file format. GAL files can be created using a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. To achieve this, the Excel spreadsheet needs to be exported to a tab-delimited format followed by renaming the file extension to include GAL as a suffix.

How to open a GAL file

You need a suitable software like GenePix to open a GAL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your GAL file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a GAL file directly in the browser:.
