What is a TDE file?

TDE files mostly belong to Tableau Desktop. TDE files are container files that may hold very different types of data based on the application that created them.
They are most commonly seen in business intelligence as Tableau Data Extract files. In this case each TDE file contains a snapshot of data used by Tableau Desktop for fast query results and visualization.
However, the same extension is also used for other purposes. For example:

• The Darkness Engine: Stores an encrypted Ogg Vorbis audio file. This usage appears in projects by The Thrilling Adventures of Lovelace.
• Measurement Data: Holds YREC measurement or Yokogawa ScopeCorder waveform data, often linked with industrial instruments.
• Texture Data: Contains texture or terrain information for game and design applications. Such files are used with Unity (see Unity) or in simulation and terrain editing as seen with Trainz and Terragen (Trainz Portal).

How to open a TDE file

You need a suitable software like Tableau Desktop to open a TDE file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your TDE file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a TDE file directly in the browser:. Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Below you will find our evaluation of the TDE files:

An TDE file is used by different programs with different formats. But the following two file formats are common:

• 50% of all TDE files have the same signature 4A 1D 6D 72 55 00. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The files are 11 KB to 5 MB in size, with a median of 140 KB. The file type is a fairly new file format. The keywords Wvhtg>, 3'9cBT?, Y?wb, '1N>4G9ai#[;n, .Bqi<sTQ, zYSx and #"iwk are typical for these files. The file name menu.ogg.tde is characteristic of these files. Files like these are about loop, alarm, about, drive, heist, launcher, sledge and plank.
• 25% of all TDE files use the same file format, which have the signature 20 02 01 62 A0 1E AB 07. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. Most of these files are 39 KB to 4 MB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. version-fix:0, version-minor:0 and version-major:1. Such TDE files store data about report, data, indicators, world, product and active.

All other TDE files (25%) have different formats, often e.g. YREC, DfX and VTv. Files like these are sometimes linked to trials, blowtorch, valuable, chopper, counter, shotgun, access, client, detach, normal, break, daily or cash.
